The Africa Minigrid Developers Association And Nigeria’s Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Associations-Alliance (REEEA-A) Join Forces To Further Their Efforts Towards Promoting Mini-Grids And Decentralized Utilities For Rural Electrification.

Nairobi, Kenya — The Africa Minigrid Developers Association has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigeria’s Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Associations-Alliance (REEEA-A), an umbrella body of all Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Associations in Nigeria, to promote the development of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency sector and to bridge the gap between individual organisations and serve as a focal point between member organizations and government institutions.

The collaboration aims at fostering consolidated efforts in promoting minigrids and decentralised utilities for rural electrification and the associated strategies and business needs to ensure sector growth and support developers through mutual promises, covenants and conditions.

Areas of collaboration include:

  1. Grid Integration, Expansion and Planning: Coordinated planning efforts to ensure that there is no duplication of efforts by the Parties
  2. Participation and input into the work of updating the Rural Electrification Master Plan (REMP)’s key insight identification and in order to avoid any challenges in planning and also duplication of service provision
  3. Provision and establishing of Mini Grid market data or research findings with input from other stakeholders and businesses through various platforms and innovation labs such as key costs, policy solutions, funding, timelines and service data that is essential in decision making
  4. Policy, Legislative and Regulations review and development: being key stakeholders in rural electrification, to collaborate in providing input into any proposed policy. legislation and regulations in line with new developments in the sector relating to rural electrification in order to enhance the process and shore experiences from across the continent and the world at large.

Jessica Stephens, CEO AMDA said: “It is clear that all stakeholders need to work together and ensure there is no duplication of efforts. AMDA is excited for this collaboration which we believe will create a  mutual understanding of the strategy and business needs to enable collaboration and the promotion of Mini Grid deployment in conjunction with supporting the national enabling environment for Mini Grids and financial support mechanisms.”

On his part, Dr. Imamuddeen Talba, Chairman, Steering Committee of the  Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Associations (REEEA-A) said: “ AMDA and REEEA-A share the common goal of ensuring universal access to energy for Nigerians and we believe that Renewable Energy plays a key role in the achievement of SDG7 and Renewable Energy resources are used to mitigate the Climate change as well as providing clean and affordable Energy for all ”

“We are excited for this collaboration to further our efforts as we have both positioned ourselves to support the Government of Nigeria to achieve the SDG 7, Universal Access to Energy by 2030 in order to ensure Universal Electrification for all Nigerians” added Dr. Talba.
